The Caldwells are actually comprised of three separate municipalities: Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell. Commuting from Caldwell NJ is easy. There are a number of buses and trains to and from New York, as well as easy access to several major highways, including the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. Caldwell NJ is culturally diverse and offers housing opportunities to all levels of income.
Like much of Essex County, Caldwell NJ is steeped in history. The Caldwells are named for the Reverend James Caldwell, who supported the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The land, once called the Horseneck Tract, was purchased by Dutch settlers in 1702 from the Lenni Lenape Indians for goods equivalent to just $325. Today, the Caldwells are a thriving collection of suburbs valued for their beauty and laid-back atmosphere.
History enthusiasts may recognize Caldwell as the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland. His former home is now open to the public as a museum. In the 1850s, Caldwell was popular as a summer retreat and hailed “the Denver of the East” for its pure air and clean water. Residents still get to enjoy that unique freshness today. The Caldwell Farmer’s Market is part of the Jersey Fresh program, which guarantees that all produce is locally grown. It’s also home to several athletic fields and parks, the biggest of which is the 18-acre Grover Cleveland Park, which offers facilities for softball, tennis, jogging, fishing and ice skating.
Caldwell NJ also offers a great educational system with elementary schools, high schools and two local universities, Caldwell University and Montclair State University.
Caldwell lies within 10 miles of the Willowbrook, Livingston and Short Hills Mall, but all you have to go is take a short trip downtown to enjoy shopping options that include major retailers as well as small businesses.
